Before the world knew her as Apple, she was a terrified little dog crying out from the bottom of a trash chute in a Washington, D.C. apartment building.

Residents heard the sounds first — faint, desperate cries echoing through the building’s garbage system. When help finally reached her, the discovery created a wave of news reports and headlines across the region. A tiny Yorkshire Terrier had been thrown away alive.

The story horrified people because it felt impossible to understand how something so small, vulnerable, and alive could be treated as refuse, discarded without a second thought.

As Apple’s story spread, she quickly became a media darling. Local television stations covered her rescue extensively, including an Emmy Award-winning journalist. Thousands of people who had never met her found themselves rooting fiercely for this tiny dog they could not stop thinking about.

She adores toys, wrestles endlessly with her best friend Heidi — another Haven dog with unusable hind legs due to severe neglect — and shrieks with absolute outrage if someone stops petting her to take a sip of water or, worse, looks at another dog. She is astonishingly fast, tearing through the rescue with complete confidence and determination, and refusing to let physical challenges hold her back one bit.

Apple's story is a reminder that cruelty does not always destroy the capacity for joy, trust, or love. The fearful dog who arrived as a heartbreaking news story has transformed into a living symbol of why rescue work matters. She represents every “throw away” pet someone deemed inconvenient, disposable, or unworthy of care, reminding the world just how much love, joy, and life can flourish despite darkness.
