Miri

Before there was Miri’s Haven the rescue, there was a tiny Yorkshire Terrier named Miracle.

In October 2020, our co-founders Georgia and Jade went to a shelter for a routine dog transport. While there, shelter staff asked them to meet another dog — a tiny Yorkie who had just arrived.

What they found was devastating. Miracle (Miri) was elderly, frail, and barely 3 pounds. She was covered in infection, with eyes so badly crusted she could not blink, and missing her entire lower jaw, unable to properly eat or drink. Years of abuse and neglect had ravaged her tiny body.

As Georgia and Jade began uncovering what Miri had endured, they realized her suffering was far greater than anyone initially understood. Miri had spent her life repeatedly bred for profit (twice a year for eleven years straight) while living in horrific conditions. She was discarded only when her body could no longer produce.

But Miracle was not defined by what had been done to her. She was fierce. Determined. Full of life despite everything she had survived. In the short time we had with her, she fought for comfort, dignity, and love with astonishing spirit. The community followed her story closely, rallying behind #JusticeForMiri as Georgia and Jade tirelessly advocated for accountability in a system where justice for abused animals is heartbreakingly rare.

For months, they pushed for action, worked with law enforcement and prosecutors, and refused to allow Miri’s story to be ignored. Their efforts ultimately helped lead to a cruelty case in Winchester, Virginia that exposed the quiet horrors animals can endure behind closed doors.

In June 2021, after months of persistence, testimony from Georgia, and appeals, justice was finally secured in Miri’s case. Her abusers received the maximum sentence available and were permanently prohibited from ever owning companion animals again. It was a rare outcome in rescue — one made possible because people refused to stop fighting for her.

We only had a little less than three months with Miri before she passed away in Georgia’s arms. The grief was immense. But so was the certainty that her life had changed something forever.

Out of that grief came purpose.

Miri’s Haven Senior Dog Rescue was founded in her honor ~ named for the little Yorkie who reminded us that senior dogs are not disposable, that broken dogs are still worthy of devotion, and that even the smallest life can leave an enormous mark on the world.

In her final moments we made a promise to Miri to keep fighting in her name. Since then, more than 700 senior dogs have found safety, care, and love through her Haven. Each one is a continuation of promise we made to her.

Her name was Miracle and this is her legacy.
