Our Story
Miri's Haven Senior Dog Rescue was founded in 2021 in honor of a tiny Yorkshire Terrier named Miri.
After a lifetime of neglect and exploitation for profit, Miri spent her final months being cared for by our co-founders, Georgia and Jade, surrounded by the safety, compassion, and dignity she had always deserved. Their advocacy also led to criminal convictions and jail sentences for Miri's abusers, outcomes that are far too rare in animal cruelty cases. Though Miri's time was short, she left a lasting legacy: the belief that senior dogs matter, regardless of their age, health, or history
We believe that no dog becomes less deserving of compassion simply because they have grown old. No dog is too old, too sick, or too broken to deserve love, kindness, and the opportunity to live out their days in safety, comfort, and dignity.
Those beliefs inspired the creation of Miri's Haven. We are dedicated exclusively to senior dogs, who are most likely to be overlooked because of their age, health challenges, or medical needs. Today, Miri's legacy lives on in every dog we rescue, every foster home that opens its doors, and every adopter who chooses to look beyond age, medical needs, or circumstance to see the extraordinary dog beneath.
What We Do
Miri's Haven is an all-volunteer, foster-based 501(c)(3) rescue serving the DC Metro region and surrounding communities. We rescue senior dogs from shelters and owner surrender situations, many of whom have experienced neglect, abuse, abandonment, inadequate veterinary care, or significant medical hardship.
Our dogs live in foster homes where they are loved and spoiled while they wait for their forever families to find them. Every dog receives the medical treatment they need to become as healthy, comfortable, and stable as possible, followed by thoughtful placement into the right forever, hospice, or sanctuary home.
We routinely welcome senior dogs with complex or costly medical needs, including cases that many organizations cannot or will not take on.
How We Do It
Miri's Haven is run entirely by volunteers and does not receive public funding. Every rescue, medical procedure, foster placement, and adoption is made possible through fundraising and the generosity of individuals, businesses, and community partners who believe in our mission. The work we do would not be possible without our foster families, donors, volunteers, adopters, and supporters.
